The Migrant Democracy Project aims to boost foreign-born representation in local councils  – Eastlondonlines

The Eastlondonlines boroughs are some of the most ethnically diverse parts of London, with a population of over 400,000 foreign-born residents.

But research collected by Migrant Democracy Project (MDP) and London School of Economics (LSE) shows local politics does not reflect this, as only 16% of local councillors in the capital identify as coming from a first-generation migrant background.

MDP aims to increase this figure through the development of its MPower training program, which help...

Obscenity State: merging heritage and activism with electronic music – Eastlondonlines

“Some people find it depressing to look at the horrors of the world, but I find it depressing to not look at the horrors”, says electronic music producer Nilly Brook, who sits with me in the living room of her Hackney flat, decorated with self-made paintings, photo frames of her family, and a mahogany piano.

Known artistically as Obscenity State, Brook released her debut album, Zoroaster on November 29. We chat – accompanied by her Tabby cat Freddie – about her cultural and musical inspirati...

Artist Onyeka Igwe on her exhibition ‘history is a living weapon in yr hand’ – Eastlondonlines

The artist Onyeka Igwe is effortlessly cool, with tatted hands, a black denim jacket and a buzzcut. As we walked through the halls of Somerset House, where she has a studio, she greeted fellow artists. We settled into a quiet area in the games room, an empty communal space with books dotted around and a football table and started to chat.

Igwe spoke with a calm demeanour – although a little tentative at first. We discussed her latest exhibition and as the conversation developed, her passion...

Feature: Inside London’s Community Radio scene

The capital is known for its diverse subcultures, and community-led radio stations are no exception.
Here’s how they are evolving their brands from the grassroots, whilst offering people a pathway into the music industry, writes Lucy Snell.
“Having had a pretty lonely experience growing up, listening to a breakfast radio show was a form of escapism”. Jade Pearson’s love for music transitioned to a love for radio after listening to Nick Grimshaw’s BBC1 Breakfast Show every morning in her teen...

Long read: From the Glass Ceiling to the Sticky Floor

Studies show that a middle-class person is four times more likely than a working class one to work in the creative industries. Economic privilege plays a huge role, but barriers also persist due to industry gatekeeping. My final year uni project delves into how the very system within the music business limits access. Based on three months of in-depth research, with input from academics and musicians, my piece critiques an industry that drowns out marginalised voices. Because music is ubiquitous– surely the industry should reflect that?

Videos

Video I made for my video reporting module at uni with an interview with artist Luisa-Maria MacCormack.

Video I directed for EastLondonLines about the launch of Croydon's music exhibition.

Promotional Media: On Tap Interviews

For my university's degree show I produced and hosted a series of promotional videos interviewing students regarding their final projects. I worked with a team of videographers, sound engineers and editors to produce the final product, which are accessible on the link below.
